When Hatis Noit sings, she uses only her voice — no lyrics, no language you could translate. Her debut album Aura (Erased Tapes, 2022) moves through forests, prehistory, and near-death, reaching for what words cannot: the first touch of a mother's skin, the dissolution of self into nature, a howl as prayer. Japanese vocal performer Hatis Noit, originally from Hokkaido and now London-based, possesses an astonishingly self-taught range inspired by diverse traditions from Gagaku to Bulgarian chanting. At 16, during a trek to Buddha's birthplace in Nepal, she heard a female monk singing Buddhist chants alone. This sound revealed the visceral power of the human voice—a primal instrument connecting us to the essence of humanity, nature, and our universe.
