KAFKA ON THE SHORE
on HARUKI MURAKAMI

LITERATURE

»A spirit forest unlocked through a doorway of a stone — books whisper through mystic woods.«

Published in 2002, Kafka on the Shore is one of Murakami's most celebrated metaphysical journeys. Two interweaving narratives—a teenage boy fleeing prophecy, an old man who speaks with cats—move through dreamlike passages where consciousness, identity, and fate blur into magical realism. Libraries hold secrets. Forests open into other worlds. A stone unlocks a doorway that should not exist. The fragrance translates this territory: the dust of old books, the haze of woods at dusk, amber warmth holding something strange and unresolved.

Texture | SOFT, HAZY, WARM

Character | ATMOSPHERIC BOOKS, WOODS, AMBER

MATERIALS
LAVENDER, OLD BOOK ACCORD, IRIS, BIRCH TAR, AMBER, MUSK, PATCHOULI, CEDARWOOD, OAKWOOD, LEATHER, VANILLA.

In 1978, Haruki Murakami was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers’ award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, which turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon. His books became bestsellers, were translated into many languages, including English, and the door was thrown wide open to Murakami’s unique and addictive fictional universe.
